But Chevy wasn't always on top. In 1969, drag racing sanctioning bodies had a simple rule: To be legal for stock-class racing, a car's engine/platform combination must have had a minimum of 50 units produced. Ford was producing 428 Cobra Jet Mustangs, Chrysler had Hemi Darts and Barracudas. Even AMC put 401cid engines into the AMX. Fred Gibb, an AHRA drag racer, thought the new Aluminum 427 slated for the Corvette would be a perfect fit for a Camaro, but GM would not participate.


For Fred Gibb, also owner of a Chevrolet dealership, the solution was simple: a Central Office Production Order, or, COPO. This order procedure was typically used for special equipment on commercial vehicles, such as police cars. This allowed Fred Gibb to order 50 specially equipped Camaros. These Camaros would include: Aluminum 427 ZL-1 Engine, new cold-air hood, heavy-duty cooling, transister ignition, a 4:11 rear axle, and either a new Turbo 400 automatic or any of three Muncie 4-speed transmissions. In October of 1968, the COPO 9560 was born. Fred Gibb had just created the most powerful production car of it's time.

 
 

A verbal agreement left Fred Gibb thinking that the cars would list for around $4900. Unfortunately, due to the high performance options, the sticker price was pushed to over $7300, more than a Corvette at the time. The cars would not sell, and Gibb could not afford to keep them. For the first time in history, Chevrolet agreed to the return of many ZL-1's. These were then redistributed to other High Performance dealers. In addition to the 50 ordered by Fred Gibb, another 19 COPO ZL-1 Camaros were ordered by other dealers, bring the total production to 69.


Fred was only able to sell thirteen of the Camaros himself. Numbers 1, 2, 5, 9, 15, 16, 19, 21, 28, 30, 45, and 48. Below is a complete list of the 50 ZL-1 Camaros shipped to Fred Gibb Chevrolet. Take note of #28, the car that was beautifully recreated and is featured on this site.
